Discussion n. 8: Amazon-Hachette again Due Feb 26

Now imagine that the cartoon shows 3 persons who look like they are from YOUR TRIBE.

Or, pick the least favorite stereotype about your tribe and imagine it used in a cartoon.

COMMENT

When you FIRST analyzed the cartoon, were you aware of the layering of meanings?

Did you correctly identify the topic, namely, abusive practices in business dealings? Or, the will of the thug?

  1. When I first analyzed the cartoon I wasn't aware of the underlying meaning. I did notice that the men in the comic did look like some type of thugs but I didn't think they we're Italian American. They just looked like some type of hoodlums. It didn't really cross my mind that they we're hunting a bounty by going to a book store.

  2. When I first analyzed the cartoon I was aware of the three men being seen as people from the Mafia. Also, the two more built men with a shorter and smaller boss shows that they are mobsters. The theme of the cartoon is immoral to me. I wouldn’t have put two in two together if we were not learning about the Italians and the Mafia.

  3. The first time I saw the cartoon I knew that the men were supposed to be the Mafia. The sizes of the men and the way they are dressed makes them the perfect candidates for the Italian stereotype. The idea that this cartoon represents is, unfortunately, a negative implication of Italians being immoral.

  4. when I first sawthe cartoon I did notice that the men looked like they were thugs or possibly from the mafia. However, I didn't actually realize the underlying meaning of the cartoon. I didn't realize that they were using Italians to be supposed to be a representaion of the abusive practices that occur within business dealings. I mostly just thought that they were some type of criminals come to deal with the problems with Amazon.I didn't identify them as Italians.

  6. When I saw the cartoon I automatically knew that it was referring to the Italians. The way the men were dressed and built portrays the Italian Mafia image. The leather Jackets the big jewelry and the oversized muscles are all descriptions of The mafias. In reality I don't believe that all Italians should be stereotyped as mafias.

  7. I immediately saw several meanings in the cartoon. I saw a “tribe” that was being targeted. The men are dressed in mafia-like clothing, are short, and are muscular men. This is a stereotype of Italians. In addition, not only did I see a stereotype meaning, but I saw a business meaning. The men were upset about the price situation and it is evident there is a business problem.

Although the cartoon reflects a business problem, I correctly identified these stereotypes. I was quick to think that the men were Italians based off their looks and actions. This cartoon stereotype is a reflection of my “tribe” because I am Italian-American. I do not condone these stereotypes, but I am aware of how people think we represent ourselves.

  8. 1. When I first saw this cartoon I was aware of the meaning of it, and the stereotypes involved. I was aware of the meanings because it is, like many media representations, a representation with heavy use of stereotypes. This depiction like many other uses the mafia as a way of portraying what is dangerous, while also being a stereotype against Italian Americans.

    2. For a majority of the cartoon I understood and could correctly identify the abuse in business practices, since any sort of intimidation tactics are not to be used in any setting, let alone professional.

  9. At first glance it was apparent that the men depicted were mafia affiliated by their apparel as well as their demeanor. Furthermore, I noticed the next layer behind this cartoon was the business aspect because of the Hatchet book group sign in the background along with the caption "Some people from Amazon are here to see you." The use of "some people" is purposeful here because it provides a unsettling tone and that the people coming to see you aren't happy to be here. It can be viewed as a passive aggressive threat if someone said that in this day and age.

  10. When I first analyzed this cartoon, I was aware of what the cartoon depicted. Some of the stereotypes portrayed on the image were obvious such as brutality, chest hair, closed fists, etc., which are most associated with the Mafia. I automatically related these men being part of the ITAM’s because that’s the topic we are concentrating on and the stereotypes that best described Italians at that time

  11. When I first analyzed the cartoon, I wasn’t aware of the layering of meanings that are behind the image. I was able to pinpoint that the “thugs” were supposed to be Italians, but I wasn’t able to pinpoint that they were Italian Americans specifically or the message they were trying to portray. These men are represented as stereotypical Italian men, which allowed me to be able to identify them.

Having had prior information on Hachette, I was able to understand that these were “thugs” who were coming to the book publishing company. Although since the secretary was not represented in the stereotypical Italian way I was not able to understand that Italian Americans were being depicted in the cartoon. Additionally, I was not able to see the hatred towards Italians this cartoon shows in terms of what they look like or their behavior.

  12. At first I thought the cartoon was pretty obvious. Even outside of the context given I would've assumed it was depicting Italians and the Mafia. The abuse in business practices and other "shady" activities seem to be a given if they were mobsters. the cartoon is meant to be simple and easy to understand by using a well known stereotype of a ethnic group.

  13. When I first saw the cartoon I was able to associate the men to resembling thugs and it reminded me of the men I see in movie and shows. The men in movies and shows who play these roles usually have an Italian accent. It is clearly showing these men as Italians who use violence and fear to get what they want. I was able to see what the cartoon depicted.

  14. When first shown, I was able to identify the meanings of the 3 mob-like characters depicting Amazon as the mafia. The visuals of the characters is important as to Amazon being shown as a mafia to stress the idea of abusive business practices. They're depicted in this way to show idea that they used intimidation against Hachette.
