Open this FILE where I collected your ITAM stereotypes. (Thank you to those who did this assignment. Everything you do in this course is going to count as extra credit toward the final grade.)
COMMENT: two separate answers.
A) Read the stereotypes and give your first reaction: would you be proud to be part of a tribe that is represented in these terms?
B) About the Hachette/Amazon cartoon: did you notice at all the heavy stereotype of the secretary? Of course, Italian Americans were outraged, especially because it appeared in such an august publication. This cartoon was a rudeness and insensitivity feast.
As to the employees of Amazon being offended: nobody is born an Amazon's employee. They can always get another job. There is a huge difference between natural inherent properties and transient ones.
Was the reaction of Italian Americans exaggerated?
REPLY to someone who expressed an opinion different than yours in either A or B.
A) After opening the file and reading the stereotypes, I can say that for the most part I would be proud to be a part of a tribe that represented these terms. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with being charismatic, passionate, fashionable, or having a big family. I see these all as positive things. The only stereotype I saw that I would not be proud to be stereotyped as is the mafia and of course Jersey Shore because these aren't accurate representations of all Italians.
ReplyDeleteB) No,at first I didn't notice the heavy stereotype of the secretary. However, now that it has been pointed out I can see why Italians would have been outraged because they are being wrongly stereotyped not only in their features of course but also they are being stereotyped as being part of the mob or as criminals who are intimidating to the secretary.
I see how you think the Italians have been wrongly stereotyped but mostly all the articles/videos we watched it was mostly talking about men features and the secretary was a woman.
DeleteI can understand why the Italian Americans thought they were being wrongly stereotyped and did not depict them. However, I did not get the sense that they were criminals from the way that they were depicted.
DeleteI understand why you would think that Jersey Shore is especially a bad stereotype. One thing that is interesting about Jersey Shore is the fact that they so heavily rely on their Italian heritage to make a totally average reality TV show.
Deletei watched jersey shore and all i saw was drunk people who had no idea of what there future would be.i also watched Real housewives of New jersey that had portrayed them as drunk, loud and angry women. that always fight. All this show bad stereotype of Italians.
DeleteA. I would be proud to be represented in these terms because everyone likes nice fashion, pasta and pizza for the most part.
ReplyDeleteB. I did not notice any stereotype with the secretary. I did notice that the three men who were standing in front of her were very stereotyped as mafia members.
I think the reaction of Italian Americans was exaggerated because personally I don’t see a problem with this cartoon it looks like any ordinary cartoon if their boss was going to have a meeting with them.
Hey Annie. I disagree with you. Their reaction wasn't exaggerated it was warranted. Imagine being thought of as criminal simply because of your background/appearance. It is an extremely offensive cartoon.
DeleteHey Annie,
DeleteI agree with you 100% and believe that everyone could make their own perception of the cartoon however they want it. Every culture has different stereotypes that might not be the best ones, but that doesn’t apply if you have your own opinion about things and don’t listen to what others say.
Hi Annie ,
Deletesorry I would have to also disagree with the second part of your comment. The way the three men are standing in front of the secretary is very intimidating. Especially by the way they are dress. It does not look like three bosses who are about to have a meeting. It appears more like they are they coming to cause some chaos if Hatchett is not willing to cooporate.
I disagree with your thoughts about exaggerating about the cartoon. That is mainly because the cartoon portrays Italians to be part of the Mafia and involved in so called "dirty money". If the place where I originated from was spoken to be like that I would be offended as well.
DeleteA. For the most part, I would be proud to be of such a tribe that is represented in such terms. I find that being joyful, bilingual, and part of a large family are very good characteristics to have. Being a member of a tribe that has these qualities would make be feel very proud of who I am.
ReplyDeleteB. No, at first I did not notice the heavy stereotype of the secretary. Having pointed it out, I looked back at the cartoon and can understand why the Italian Americans would be outraged slightly. Although, I do feel the Italian Americans exaggerated a little too much towards the extent of the cartoon. This seems like an ordinary cartoon to me, with not much of stereotypical value. To be upset about this cartoon would be normal because they are not depicted with the characteristics of an Italian American, but I do not see the need to be outraged by it.
I disagree with your statement of how Italian Americans "exaggerated". They were seen as violent and tough. Yes it shows they have power, but with the way the are dressed and represented it's kind of like they took that power and didn't earn. They don't look respectable, and the look like hoodlums. Italian Americans shouldn't be viewed as the bad guy based off a stereotype and an issue that had nothing to do with nationality. They had every right to be upset about this cartoon.
DeleteA) Honestly, the stereotypes are the same as any other stereotypes. I don't really have a reaction to them, because there's tons of terrible stereotypes about everyone, it's nothing unusual. As far as being "proud" that's not really any feeling I have towards people who are assumed to be like me. Being proud just means you group yourself with other people as a part of your own identity which I don't do.
ReplyDeleteB) I didn't notice the secretary the first time around. I don't think it's fair to say that an Amazon employee should just quit if they're offended. It's their job, their wellbeing. Most people in America don't have the ability to just up and quit their job. I think it's actually foolish to think that's a possibility for any working class person.
I think it's also weird that this is the cartoon that set Italian Americans off. There are way worse cartoons about Italian Americans.
I feel that the outrage from the Italian Americans comes from the content of the cartoon. It's not a cartoon directly about Italian Americans, but its choosing stereotypes of Italian mobsters as a way of depicting Amazon as an aggressive mob-like company in the way they treated Hachette.
DeleteHi Ivy,while I do understand where you are coning from with your perspective,I don't completely agree. Just because there are worse cartoons,it doesn't mean that their outrage was exaggerated so to speak. The way a person is depicted can go a long way and can be very offensive.
DeleteAlso, considering your point about the employees up and quitting their job, I agree, I don't think it is a particularly wise thing to do However, I think that standing up for what you believe in and standing against something you think is wrong goes a long way and for some, that may mean having to quit their job.
Hi Ivy, I do agree that their are a lot worse cartoons that depict Italian Americans, but that doesn't take away that this is still offensive. To put it in perspective, the same way Im African American and don't want to see black people labeled as gangsters and thugs is the same thing as Italian Americans not wanting to be labeled as mobsters and mafia affiliated.
DeleteA) From the way my classmates stereotyped Italians, I would not mind being apart of the Italian tribe. The Italians were classified as having large families, having a love for food, being tan, and fashionable. These seem to be pretty nice qualities. However, my classmates did note that they are often in Mafias and act like the way Jersey Shore presents Italians.
ReplyDeleteB.) I did not notice a stereotype with the secretary. I only noticed the stereotypes with the outraged men. I can understand why the Italian -Americans were outraged. They were stereotypes as being aggressive and in a mafia.
A) With the exception of very few choices of stereotypes, I would generally be proud of a tribe defined as such. Large families generally mean having good bonds with enough of them, which would also be linked to heritage pride, by sharing the pride with family members in households. Likewise, the food choices are common choices of food for various other tribes, so they are generally welcomed both inside the tribe and out of it.
ReplyDeleteB) I did notice the stereotypes on the visuals of the men in the cartoon. Tracksuits and a small boss accompanied by much larger bodyguards are stereotypes of mobsters that are certainly not new. I feel that Italian Americans did not overreact to the cartoon, as it was in poor taste to depict mobsters in a cartoon that had nothing to do with them at all.
I agree with your thoughts about being proud of your tribe because large families do mean having a connection with them and I think that is really important. Most of the stereotypes of the Italians were not offensive to me besides the Mafia and stereotypes in that manner.
DeleteA. I would be proud of some aspects of my tribe and saddened by others. I love pasta, pizza, and fashion. I wouldn't be angry if anyone associated those things with me. However, I wouldn't want to be thought of as a mobster or a loud individual.
ReplyDeleteB. I didn't notice the secretary pushing any stereotypes. I did notice that the men did convey the stereotypes that we've spoken about. They were hairy, speaking with their hands, apart of the mafia, the boss was wearing a nice suit and flashy jewelry. The cartoon speaks to the changes that need to be made in society and its depiction of "others."
A. this country/tribe has brought a lot of things into other tribes like: wine, food and clothes. what more can you ask for than to be proud of tribe. i would certainly be proud of the tribe, they are had working people who thrives for successes.
ReplyDeleteB.i did not notice any of the heavy stereotype of the secretary. the three men were heavily stereotyped, they were dressed like a mob member and had gold chain on and the short man what drawn like a Godfather.
A) Personally I would be proud to be apart of this tribe because they have a lot of desirable qualities to offer. Having big families, being diverse, passionate, fashionable are all great things to have and be apart of. There are a few undesirable qualities that I wouldn't like to identify with but every tribe will have their negatives and it's just important to know that stereotypes of your tribe don't define who you are specifically as a person.
ReplyDeleteB) I didn't notice the heavy stereotype of the secretary largely because I was paying most of my attention to the bigotry of the represented mobsters painted out to be the amazon employees. The reaction of Italian Americans was not exaggerated because companies need to know if they pull that stunt on any tribe really, they will be stopped in their tracks immediately, especially in this day and age.
1. I would be proud to be part of this tribe as it has many nice aspects that represents them such as being food/big family lovers. There were a couple of stereotypes that I would eliminate because it doesn’t portray every Italian out there.
ReplyDelete2. I did notice the heavy stereotype of the secretary as her look gave a picture a better meaning. It makes those three men stand out more as a mafia and people being afraid of them. The reaction of Italian Americans was exaggerated because after all its just a cartoon, and everyone can make their own assumptions of it. We all have different views and see it unlike others, and whatever people choose to believe in will give the meaning that they want to see.
I would proud to be a part of this tribe. It's great to see positive aspects of the Italians tribe as oppose to the negative aspects. The great food and fashion and family are all great things to be proud of and appreciate. In regards to Jersey Shore and the Real House wife of Jersey, I feel like that didn't portray a great image. Mostly showed drunks and loudness.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to the cartoon, I didn't notice the stereotype of the secretary. I was mostly paying attention to the mafias intimidating the secretary.

ReplyDeleteA) After reading over the different Italian stereotypes I believe I would be proud to be apart of this tribe because one of my biggest strong suits is family and that was a stereotype that many people gave. Another big stereotype people often give is food. I would be proud of my culture ethnicity if we were stereotyped to be in such a way.
ReplyDeleteB) I did notice the huge stereotype in the cartoon after looking at it for a while. It is incredibly rude that Italians are described to be such manner. The reaction of the Italian Americans towards this cartoon was not exaggerated at all and I believe I would have reacted in the same way. It is uncivil and offensive to anyone it was meant towards.
