Discussion n. 32: KISS ME, GUIDO Due May 17

1) Who is the best actor/actress in the film? Who is the worst?

2) Italian Americans, gay people and one Jewish woman are targeted for stereotyping: which one of them had it worst?

  1. In my opinion the best actor in the film was the actor who played Warren. I think that he really embodied the character that he was playing. I believed his emotions particularly in the scene where Frankie finds out that he is gay.
I think that the worst actor was the one who played Frankie. There was something about his acting that didn't seem quite genuine. Even when he would do the impersonations of other actors (which was probably supposed to be a representation of how much he desired to be an actor), I didn't find it impressive. Although the impersonations were probably supposed to be terrible in the first place (I'm not sure), I still didn't think they even lived up to that standard. I also, think that the actor could have portrayed his anger towards his brother way better than he did.

Out of the of the three; Italian Americans, the Jewish Woman and the gay people in the film, I would have to say that it was the gay people that had it the worst. To me, it was apparent throughout the film the disgust that several people felt when observing the gay men on the street. For example, when Frankie and his friend Joey are walking on the street and they see them greet each other, Joey says something along the lines of, "look at them kissing in broad daylight." Also, one can also see the blatant discrimination when Frankie first finds out that Warren is gay as well as the audience reaction when Frankie is in the play near the end of the movie. I think that within the film it is the gay people who suffered the most judgement.

    1. I disagree that Frankie’s character was the worse actor because I’ve known both gay and straight men. Men that are straight would be disgusted to see gay people hugging and kissing in public, but Frankie has to live with one. From someone that does not like gays turning to live with one is a big change he can’t overcome it within a short amount of time knowing each other.

    2. I think that Frankie was actually the best actor. He had to adjust to being around gays and the comments that came along with being associated with the gays. He did a great job adjusting and even being part of the gay play.

  2. In the kiss me guido Nick scotti appear to be the best actor while Michael B appears to be the worst actor.

Italian Americans are the one who had it really bad. They have been targeted mainly on different TV stations on shows they perform like MTV

  3. In my opinion the best actor in the film was Warren. This could be because he was the only character in the film who wasn't extremely stereotypical and therefore was bearable. He actually seems very offended and hurt when Frankie makes the joke about him being gay and seems seriously fed up with Dakota at the end. His emotions and expressions were more genuine than all the others who either overacted or seemed dull and monotonous or both. The worst actor in my opinion was Frankie. He always seemed so stiff, like he was trying too hard. He seemed to put too much emotion into his words which only made them sound fake and emotionless. He also lacked genuine expressions which made him annoying to watch.

I think the Jewish woman had it worst. She was so desperate and dumb, it was pathetic. Asking someone their zodiac sign when she just meets them? Going into a fit in front of a stranger and seriously hurting him just because his brother didn't call? Ranting about your problems to strangers in the street? Extremely dependent yet always saying otherwise, constantly hyper and angry; she was just ridiculous and sad and that ending didn't redeem her. None of the women seemed good in this movie.

    1. I agree that the Jewish woman suffered from a great deal of stereotyping. Although I write that I believe that the gay people encountered the most stereotyping, looking back at the movie I find that all three groups really suffered a great deal of stereotyping and it all was extremely offensive. From Joey carrying the clothes in the pizza box to Meryl being so open about her sexual life with almost everyone in the movie, to some of the gay characters having this overly flamboyant personality. It was all quite difficult to take in.

  4. In the movie Kiss Me, Guido I think the best actor is Warren and Frankie because after the first time they had a "little argument" they got along quick after and started living together even though Frankie is quite paranoid that Warren is gay; he takes an extra step to everything when living in the same house together. I think Frankie is a good actor because when someone hears that the other person is gay they would think of "germs". I think the worse actor in the movie is Pino because he knew he made mistakes, but he acts like he has done nothing wrong and asked Frankie to come back to live with them at the house. I feel like Pino’s character was just in and out of the movie.
In the movie I think gay people had it worse because Pino and Frankie is like disgusted by gay people every time they drive pass or walk pass a gay couple they would say some disturbing words, and the pizza guy could not stop staring at the gay couple while they were walking to find an apartment.

    1. I agree with your comment about the gays having it the worst. At that time being gay wasn't accepted therefore one ad to be ready to deal with society.

    1. I can see why you would think that the Italian Americans were targeted the worst since they are targeted in many different TV shows and films. It is hard to find a balance between the Italian American culture and the stereotypes that comes with it.

  6. In the movie Guido the best character was Frankie. Frankie's acting was just the best. Dealing with the gays and him playing the gay part in the play was just amazing.Although he was Anti gay, he still made it work. I can say that the worst actor was Pino. Pino was all over the place in the movie, he seemed very much like the player type and that I didn't really like about him. I Didn't really like his character. He was always in need of something whether it's food, money or even someone's girlfriend. He was more of a user if anything. I would say that out of the three groups, gay people had it the worst. Being gay was something that was not accepted by society, like it is now. Being gay was something that was frowned upon and gay individuals were always being judge. An example of this was when the mom passed out at the play when he saw that her son was part of the gay play and kissed the other guy. In addition, when Frankie was with Warren at the park, the two guys were judging them and Frankie and Warren ended up getting into a fight with them.

  7. Putting aside the cheesy karate kick, I feel that Anthony Barrile played the role of Warren very well. Between the key gay characters being either cocky, flamboyant or very flamboyant, he seemed to set a realistic mood of a gay character. His performance of the character helped emphasize his homosexuality when it mattered, but did not throw it in your face in every scene he appeared. With that, I feel that the worst actor was Frankie. Much of his true acting was borderline believable, almost as if he was simply told to act like his idea of a Guido. A combination of throwing movie quotes into unnecessary pieces of dialogue and awful impersonations of them ultimately made the character feel like an eyesore to see. Additionally, he's meant to come off as a good guy, yet blatantly takes a jab at gays in a scene or two. Granted, this changes over time, but it made it difficult to comprehend what exactly he was supposed to be.

Of the three stereotypes, I feel gay people had it the worst. The other two were mostly for comedic effect, while the gay stereotype was exaggerated where it didn't need to be. Meanwhile, gay people were given dirty/threatening looks and referred to as faggots on several occasions, which is a lot worse than the relatively lighthearted Italian stereotypes that become obnoxious in the film.

  8. I think that the best actor of the film Kiss Me Guido was Warren. The actor that portrayed Warren was able to depict to the character to his fullest and really put all his emotion into the character. He was able to embody the character as if it was himself and really put his 'all' into the character. Warren's emotions towards the other characters was a genuine feel of concern and he was really intrigued by what others had to say. I think that the worst actor in the film was Pino because he was too focused on everything else to concentrate on one aspect. Even when Pino knew that he was at fault he didn't seem to care of his actions and continued to go about his day as if nothing had happened. It was hard to grasp a sense of the character because he was in too many places at once mentally.

Out of the three groups of people being targeted, Italian Americans, gay people, and one Jewish woman I think the gay people had it the worst. They were constantly being called names which they had to deal with daily. Everywhere the gay people walked they would be stared at and looked at with a face of disgust. They just wanted to live their lives normally when everyone around them made it hard for them to do so.
