Discussion n. 20 -- CHRIST IN CONCRETE -- JOB due after break

COMMENT:  in the chapter JOB, what is the most heart wrenching moment? Use a citation (quote/unquote) with page number to identify it.

It's OK if you choose something that has already been mentioned. In this case, write a second paragraph (2) with an additional moment. There are plenty to choose from.

REPLY:  choose a COMMENT that identify a moment you had overlooked but that seems particularly poignant.

  1. In my opinion, the most heart wrenching moment in the chapter JOB, is when Luigi falls on the job and hurts his leg "...down Luigi-- down swiftly certain stone--but?!!my leggssss...."(47). The reason that I find this to be the most heart wrenching is because, it was another let down for Paul and his family. Luigi had promised that he would help and the moment he did, he is no longer able to work due to his injury. In this moment it just seems as if the odds are completely stacked against them and they won't be able to pull through it.

    1. Hi Amanda,

I agree this was quite a heart wrenching scene because all Geremio's children were all young and Annunziata had to take care of her babies so there was no way she could have supported the family herself. Luigi was someone that could have helped them during the hard times but he injured himself.

    2. I had not thought of this point as being the most heart wrenching initially but I can understand now why it is one of them. Luigi vowed to take care of them, and the moment he did it was taken away from him. I agree that this event is another point in time for the family to view as being bad or that nothing goes there way.

    3. I can see why you feel this was a heart wrenching moment. It was the first of many instances where they felt hopeless, but it was the first to happen after Geremio's death. That may have left them feeling even more hopeless.

    4. Amanda,

I think you make a valid point. I overlooked this scene, but this is imperative because it is the start of a new problem or yet another let down.

This scene is very tragic and I feel a strong emotional response.

  2. In the chapter JOB the most heart wrenching moment was when Paul tried to support his whole family by himself when his father Geremio died. "I must become a bricklayer! "Who brings food to your home?" asked Nazone. "... No one..."" (66). They did not want to hire him because he was young and small but he begged for the job.

    1. Hi Annie,

I agree that this moment was also heart wrenching because at such a young age Paul takes on this huge reponsibility that although I believe he wants to do it, still becomes somewhat of a burden for him.

    2. Hello,
I do agree that when Paul decided he wanted to become a bricklayer it was a very important scene. Being that he was so young and was willing to risk his health for the job shows his determination.

  3. From the section of the book titled “Job” the most heart wrenching moment was when Annunziata and the children were starving because there was not enough food for everyone in the family to eat. “In the home of Geremio the air has become hunger. In the home of Geremio stomachs have become wounds. In the home of Geremio senses have become famished mouths. In the home of Geremio hearts have become swollen vessels and eyes ceaseless falls…in the home of Geremio the love of Geremio has become rising mountains” (60). When Geremio was alive, he provided for the family with whatever little amount of money he could scrape up; but it was enough to provide them with food. Now that he has passed there is barely enough food for them, even more so with so many little kids.

    1. I agree with you. These lines were truly painful to read. Not only were they facing loss and sadness but hunger as well. Emotional and physical suffering. Also, the way it is written with repetition intensifies the affect of these lines.

    2. I completely agree, it was difficult imagining the pain they were enduring and how Annunziata didn’t eat so she can feed her children was so sad. Their struggles occurred so suddenly and took a toll on their lives.

  4. The part that I found most hear wrenching was when Paul was aching all over his body and felt sick yet still layed brick only to receive 5 dollars although the foreman himself admitted he deserved more. Paul then came home crying to his mother saying, "Mama, mama they gave me only five dollars and I feel so small and everything aches.." Pg 92
This part broke my heart because Paul always gave hope and support to others so seeing him so helpless and broken truly hurt. His realization of how unfair life is was one of the saddest parts in the book.

  6. One of the most heart wrenching moments in the book was when Annunziata and Paul went to go see the Cripple. The cripple says he says that he never left you and never will. He says he's watching you with his endearing love every minute and that he's doing all in his powerFrom the spirit woild to protect and help you...Now he stands back and wanted to make a wish to yourself; The wish of your hearts desires don't let me hear it!" (page 107).
At this moment I felt the happiness and upliftedness that Paul and Annunziata were feeling. They were looking for hope all this time and had finally gotten it. Knowing that they are in touch with the spirit of Geremio gave them the power to keep fighting through the suffering that they were going through.

  7. The most heart wrenching moment for me may have been when Paul first received his 5 dollar pay.
"When he finally opened the envelope he saw one papery five-dollar bill" "Why why whywhy? had they given him only five dollars?" (83)
I related to it well, as it reminded me of the days I had done off the books work in backbreaking 12 hour shifts on Saturdays, only to receive late pay or less than expected pay.
Of course, Paul's circumstances were much worse than mine, but the situation itself resonated with me and quickly generated my sympathy.

  8. In the chapter, "Job" there are many graphic, heart wrenching moments. One moment that left me with a strong emotional response is when the work conditions and physical pain was highlighted. "... but she looks at his legs and he becomes terribly fearful and afraid to follow her eyes and when he tries to jump to his feet he cannot move and his two legs begin to pump like engines and pump pain through him an she lowers her vacant eyes and her mouth hangs meaning that she expected him to fail her..."

This long detailed quote shows how demanding the labor is. He is physically weak and can push no further. The body can only do so much and when the body is the only tool for some of these men, hope is lost.

    1. Rereading this I feel that I did not fully take in how intense that sentence was the first time and I feel that it's mainly because of how long the sentence was that maybe led to losing my train of thought. I wholeheartedly agree that the quote show demanding the labor was and how draining it was as well.

  9. Knowing how young Paul is, the most heart wrenching moment for me, was when Paul was so stressed about having no money and working so hard, that he fell ill. He sobbed to his mother and became sick. He was so weak to work. Imagining a young boy having all this responsibility and he not being able to do anything about it. What Paul had to deal with is what many adults are unable to handle.

  10. In the chapter 'JOB' I thought the most heart wrenching moment when Paul saw how hungry his family was and started wandering through the streets looking for food. He first goes to the grocery store and no one helps him, then he goes to the church which seems to be another place that won't help him. However eventually he is given food to bring to his family (from the church). "for the lord will take these two onions and four potatoes and break them into portions to last until my arms are strong for work" (51)

This moment signified how desperate it was for the family at the time. They all felt like they were going to die, and Paul was just hoping they could survive until he was able to work.

  11. Throughout this chapter the tone of the author was very melancholic and that helped set the stage for how heart-braking the aftermath of Geremio's death was . The particular phrase that resonated with me most was "In the home of Geremio hearts have become swollen vessels and eyes ceaseless falls" (pg.60). I feel as if no other choice of diction could've more accurately described the sorrow that was pent up in that home. The feeling of desperation is so powerful in those words and they definitely hit for me.
