  1. I was really disgusted with the living conditions in which they had these people living in and that they had to endure such horrid way in which they had to live. They really were living and sleeping on top of one another as if they were animals. I also found it a bit perturbed by the picture of the children working with the wheelbarrows

    1. Hi Amanda,

I agree that their living conditions were repulsive. I don't think they were sleeping on top of one another. They could not afford any heating system or extra blankets so they slept really close to each other possibly for body heat.

  2. My immediate reaction while watching the slideshow is that their living conditions were terrible/unsanitary, there was around ten people living/sleeping in a tiny room. There was clearly not enough room for each person to sleep in the tiny room.

    1. Annie,

I agree, the conditions were awful. Although, I stated the living conditions were filthy I did not note that it is unsanitary.

    2. Hi Annie,
True that you mentioned about the horrible and unbearable conditions including the lack proper sanitary system. It must have spread diseases and filth all over. Without proper hygiene, living is so worse.
      Thanks.

    3. I agree their conditions were nothing close to being sanitary or clean. With so many people sleeping one tiny space you come to think how would I feel if I slept in a room with so many people.

  3. My immediate reaction was one of sorrow. The filthy conditions made it look like the living environment was unbearable. Many slept together for warmth and children worked. I felt bad for the children enduring the harsh conditions.

    1. Hi Ashley,

I agree, I could only imagine how unbearable the living conditions may have been. Besides being disgusted by the situation I can also agree that it was very disheartening to see the conditions.

    2. I agree with the idea of the slideshow being disheartening as well. Seeing the conditions that entire families had to put up with is unfortunate, especially considering how few of them were able to eventually prosper.

    1. This truly must have been an unhealthy environment for them. I was more focuses on the fact that it seemed very uncomfortable.

    2. Describing the living situations as being "sick" is a great way to describe what is going on. i was saddened to see their living conditions but feeling sick is a better way to express how I actually felt towards watching them.

  5. My first reaction was that I felt really sorry for the Italians and other immigrants that went to America for better life but unfortunately couldn't get it sooner or later and to suffer a lot. It make me sick to my stomach.

  6. My immediate reaction was one of severe sadness as one feels for someone they know. All the pictures seemed to display Pascal, his gang and family. I was shocked to see, with my eyes, all the pictures I had imagined in my head, while reading The Son of Italy. These truly did look like places where animals should live, not humans. It is heartbreaking to see what these people had to go through.

    1. These pictures made pascals words come to life. I was able to feel what he was saying about his migrating experience.

  7. My initial reaction was a reinforcement of how I had already previously seen conditions Italians lived in. Yet, the slideshow extended that by covering every role that was present at the time, including children and families.

    1. Yes, I feel exactly the same way. The slideshow definitely shows the roles of the children and families.

  8. When looking at the slideshow the living condition in which they had these people living in are sad and extremely inhumane. They were exposed to illnesses and filth. They weren’t treated as humans but treated worse than animals. Looking at these living conditions and knowing how tough it was for them to migrate here, is a dream being destroyed but through pictures.

  9. While I watching the slideshow I was thinking what terrible conditions they had to first come to America in, live in and work in. They slept on barrels and one on top of another. The woman were at home with their children in sickly conditions. The disgusting conditions that they lived in are definitely not the life that anyone would sign up for.

  10. I felt sad for the people, immediately, while watching the slide show. Son of Italy doesn't elaborate on the conditions that women and children also had to suffer through, but this slideshow showed that.

  11. My first, immediate, unfiltered reaction when I watched this slideshow was a sense of sorrow for those that migrated. Seeing their terrible living conditions how they were pained my heart to know what they had to deal with. I knew the living conditions of those who migrated were bad, but I had not realized how bad they were until I saw them first-hand.
